The Color Red

While I am a Red Sox fan, it is the only color that I don't particularly care for. So when I received the most recent issue of Piecework I was intrigued, because it is dedicated to the color red. This issue explores the historical challenges and methods for dyeing fiber red, and explores the traditional uses of this color in various fiber arts throughout history. It got me to thinking about how one could strategically use red even if it wasn't a favored color (though I'm still not sure how I would use the color red). So I took a quick lap around my home and snapped some shots of all the red I could find.

I love these little fish shaped bowls and use them as a spoon rest on my stove.

This is a collection of various vacation souvenirs. The whole shelf has similar items, but this was the only level with red items.
This painting hangs in my living room, only the very centers of the flowers are almost red. Obviously its not a red painting.
This is a rug that I inherited from a roommate. It works just fine in the bathroom, in fact I love having the slightly larger than standard rug for the bathroom. But it is only in there by default, not explicit choice.
This is all of the red bedding that I have in my collection. It goes very nicely together and I love the mix of the Scandinavian pattern with the classic Hudson Bay Company stripes.

So aside from my wardrobe, books, and perhaps some kitchen gadgets, that is all the red that I have in my home. I was kind of surprised how easy it was to track down all the bigger pieces that are red. It has me thinking about some of the symbols of red around the world (wealth, power, prosperity) and if more red could be worked into my world.
