Help me choose a baby blanket

After feeling cooped up in the house due to the recent snowstorm, I took my sweet time getting back to work. Sadly, I'm not even sure what I spent last week doing. My productivity is back and stronger than before. I did take some time last week to outline all the unfinished projects downstairs (where our bedrooms are). I have decided that the upstairs is in an okay state, but boy that downstairs is in terrible shape (please reference this post if you don't believe me). With smaller portions of these projects clearly outlined, I feel like I can dedicate more time to some creative pursuits.

In December, I partook in a cyber monday yarn sale and bought a bunch of sock yarn to keep my feet warm and my fingers occupied (though my fingers aren't really having trouble thinking amusements). I also included enough undyed yarn to knit a baby blanket for myself. My thought process being that our little one prefers privacy (literally sat on its hands during the 20 week ultrasound in order to maintain his or her modesty) so I can knit up a blanket in bare (undyed) yarn that can be later dyed to whatever color is most appropriate (though I am partial to lime green).

This design and/or pattern choosing process has more to it than I initially thought. Sure there are some blankets that are overtly feminine or overtly masculine, but not many. So that hasn't factored in as much as I initially feared. Instead I am considering the season, ability to be dyed into any color, and some construction preferences. In my mind, I see myself lining the blanket with white fleece, and idea that led me to the idea of a lacy blanket. Then I saw this etsy listing.

I love the richness of the traveling stitches. I have also found a lot of cabled patterns that I love, but for a March baby who will be most blanket dependent in the warm months I think cables may be a bit much. Plus, the lovely cabled patterns can easily be used for a late summer/autumn/winter babe.

This blanket just looks so squishy and wonderful. The lace is small enough not to let out warmth or capture little fingers and toes. Really the stitch pattern is more of a textured pattern than what I think of as lace (which is purely my own option on that matter).

Now this is what I consider lacy, the pattern repeats but it somehow makes a picture of sorts. Unlike above where the shorter repeats lend themselves to texture. This is also the only pattern worked from the center out in the round, which is a preferred construction method of mine. I also really like that it is a bit springy in its patterning.

In reality, I would be happy to knit all any of these blankets. I really cannot decide. So I would like to put it into your hands. Please leave a comment below telling me which is your favorite, and I will cast on the winner on Friday, February 21.

  1. I like the Pine Forest Baby Blanket by Ingrid Aartun Bøe!

  2. I like the Lotus. I think their lousy choice of color is what's holding it back in the rankings right now. I think the design is more interesting than the pine forest, and I think the Darella although very nice is a finger/toe trap. Since you may do all of them anyway I'll suggest order. Lotus, Darella then Pine Forest.

  3. Not loving the Darella because of the edging, and I think the yarn is what makes Pine Forest; it would be boring to knit it in an undyed yarn. Lotus would be the most interesting to knit.
