Life's a Beach

Who doesn’t love a big lacy knit market bag? It can carry everything you may need with the ever expanding lace pattern. I have taken special pleasure in bringing such bags to the grocery store and watching the bagger fit my entire order into the seemingly tiny bag. Certainly not the most responsible way to get my groceries home, but we all need a little amusement.

The problem with these bags is they do not always translate to purse replacing bags. I see the string bag as a perfect take to the beach bag, but where on do you keep your normal purse items? I saw some bags with obvious pouches added in where one would normally find a zip pocket on a purse, but that just seemed so obvious and broke up the lace pattern. So I thought about the bottom of the bag, having the bottom of the bag be solid certainly makes sense anyway. So the base of this bag is knit as two layers to create a secret zippered pocket. Not ideal for a trip to the store, but great if you are taking this bag to the beach or on a picnic. Your valuables are safely tucked away at the bottom of the bag, and if you take enough care sewing in the zipper then nobody will be able to tell there is anything more to this bag than meets the eye.

I loved the knitted fabric so much that I decided to take a bit of the leftover yarn to create a matching clutch. The knitted rectangle was reminiscent of a crocheted clutch I had made years ago and secured with snaps. It worked okay, but I wanted to see if there was a way to get a cleaner closure (this way I know my lip gloss will be safe). So I took a second zipper, and depending on how full I stuff this clutch, the lines are also very clean. The slipped stitch pattern in 100% cotton yarn is a bit of a bear to work with, but I love the firm fabric that results and the texture is just delightfully highlighted by the subtle heather.
