Double Knitting

I released a new pattern on Tuesday. I know that I have my own take on double knitting, I just figured out the way that works best for me. Luckily for all of you in Internet world, I had the foresight to take some pictures while I started out on this pattern sample!

Firstly, my favorite trick, when adding a new color of yarn I almost always just put a slip knot on my right hand needle. This way the yarn is held at a constant tension and I don't have to think about my right hand holding that tension.

Once I have knit back to the slip knot naturally, I just drop it from the needle. It comes undone easily enough, and by this point there is no risk of losing any stitches. Okay, now for some of the techniques I use that are specific to double knitting.

This is how I incorporate the new color into my double knitting. I knit in the front of the first stitch on my left hand needle with the main color. Then in the same stitch, I knit into the back with the contrasting color. Its a bit fiddly for the first couple of stitches, but it gets easier quickly.

This is what the main color side will look like.

And what the contrast color side looks like. I personally like the purl bump detail (plus it matches the way the corresponding row will look at the bind off end of the scarf).

I will do more on the ways that I knit the double knitting pattern later this week.
