The Adventures of a Milk Maiden

With the arrival of my daughter, many things in our household have changed. The cat has to sleep on his own. We have much more laundry than before. The two of us parents are excellent at forgetting to eat and sleep because she is just so adorable to look at. And I have a new job as a full time exclusive dairy. Here are some of my observations from the first month of motherhood.

What they don't tell you about babies when they suggest to sleep when they sleep is that they fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Inevitably as soon as I start to feel a nap coming on, she is ready to eat. And if it is the middle of the night, it is party time (during the day, she falls right back to sleep).

Sure everybody poops, but this little girl has regularly gone through 3 diapers in a single feeding! Any time she is fussy during a feeding we take a break to check that diaper. So glad we are using cloth diapers, because with disposables that's money straight down the drain.

Now let's talk about those feedings...I have given up on either of us wearing clothes for them. Even when she is latched on well and going to town, there is still a whole other feeding faucet that is turned all the way up. The idea of being able to feed her in public is a long way from my mind, unless I were willing to change my own clothes after the feeding.

Which brings me to a final point on feedings, they don't have a schedule or pattern. Sometimes it's a quick nibble, other times it's an hour or more of sampling. Regardless it's followed by a passed out little one until the diaper fills again and she is ready for another milk body treatment (because thinking of it as a fancy spa treatment is great for both of our self-esteems!)

As time has gone on I have found some tricks for managing the milky mess, and really I would rather have the milky mess than worry about my milk production. Those gems will have to wait for another post.
